Post Disabling Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications

If you are receiving a message regarding your version of Windows XP is not geniune, then this is due to the "Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications (KB905474)" update. Many people are classing this update as spyware from Microsoft, obviously this is not the case if your copy of Windows XP is legit. However, some individuals are still receiving this message even with a legit copy of Windows XP.

Due to the way it is designed it cannot be removed (eventhough Microsoft claim it can be via Add/Remove Programs).

So here is a workaround that will stop those annoying popups from this update. Note: this will affect further critical updates available from Microsoft.

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Folder Options (if you cannot see this 'switch to Classic View').

Click the View Tab scroll to the bottom and untick 'Use simple file sharing (Recommended)' if it is ticked. Click 'Apply' then 'Ok'.

Double-click My Computer then your C Drive (Local Drive), then Windows then System32 folder.

You will need to do the following procedure on each of the following files
LegitCheckControl.dll
WgaLogon.dll
WgaTray.exe

Right-click
on any of the above files, and select 'Properties'
Click the Security Tab
Click 'Advanced'
Uncheck Inherit then click 'Remove' (not copy)

Now your done, these files can never be replaced by Windows Update.

This update was released on 30th May 2006
