Apologies from Digital Port!

Right, im going to write a mini guide on security now, mainly because i have seen so many cases and so many people saying there computer is broken etc, when its actually their fault, for not keeping upto date with security and not running firewalls and anti virus software.

1. The first thing you must do to keep windows up-to-date, which will stop hackers from compromising backdoors in windows. Go to www.windowsupdate.com and check for all security patches and downloads, and download them. You will need to be logged on with administartor priviledges to do this. Depending on how often you check for updates this may take a while.

2. Have a decent firewall to stop hackers from gaining entry to your system, Digitalport recomend Sygate Personal Firewall (http://smb.sygate.com) which is free, again make sure you update this regulary as well. You may have a hardware router that has built in NAT (Network Address Translation), this will also keep hackers out, but it is recomended you run a software firewall aswell.

3. Have an anti-virus program, Digitalport recommend AVG free (www.grisoft.com) which is one of the most commonly known Antivirus systems, AGAIN remember to keep this updated, it is important aswell.

4. This one isnt really security, but will help rid your machine of nasties. Digitalport recomend Spybot Search and Destroy, available from www.safer-networking.org, this will scan your PC for spyware in the registry and in files. Once again keep it updated.

As you can see, updating is one of the most important things you need to do, we recomend you update at least once a week, to keep secure.

Re: Keep your security up-to-date

One thing I would add to this is that these days you have to go through that silly Micro$oft product verification before you can download updates and patches.
Now I'm not pointing any fingers here, but I'm very aware that some of you at least will have cracked Windows installations on your PC's, which will not pass muster with Gates and Co for the purposes of product verification.
If you should have any problems with updating, go to www.bigfix.com and download the updater programme. You can set it to work on auto or manual so you won't miss them when they become available, it's NOT spyware or anything like that and above all it's free.
It's also a darn sight quicker to use than the proper M$ site, which is a bonus if you're tight on time!
JB.
