Q: What about multiplayer games? Do you plan to support them? If so, will you provide the necessary server side
tools and bandwidth?
Ah yes, multiplayer…. If I had a nickel for every time one of the module users asked me for multiplayer games I could probably retire. I have been looking for a multiplayer solution for a long time. I’ve experimented with one source PHP based solutions, Java solutions and I think there was even a PERL solution in there somewhere. Fortunately however, I recently got to have lunch with Jobe Makar who is with Electrotank studio and I am hoping to solidify a relationship with them whereby we can offer Electroserver based solutions to our users. If that happens we will be offering a couple of products in order to provide multiplayer games. Customers will buy a subscription to our Electroserver in the form of concurrent connection packages. They will buy either 20, 40, 60 or more concurrent connections from us. That will probably come with a game or chat program to start them out on. After that, they will be able to buy multiplayer games from our store and host them on their site. The game would connect to our server but would make it appear that they have their own multiplayer games. Customers with smaller sites will also have the option to purchase cheaper subscriptions where their users would be pooled with our site and several other sites in order to make it appear that there are more people online than there really are. This way users don’t go into a chess game and leave frustrated because nobody else is playing at the time.
The great thing about this type of setup is that you can get a great multiplayer socket server even if you don’t have root access to your server, as most people used shared hosting. It’s the best of both worlds: you keep your inexpensive hosting and still get dedicated server performance and benefits.
