First of all a happy New Year to one and all and I hope it's a good one.
Now Then I'm thinking of connecting another pc to mine for the grandkids but dont want a load of wires everywhere as my comp is downstairs and the 2nd one will be in a bedroom.
I beleive a wireless connecter will be best but which one? Ive just looked on ebay as a guide and there are so many to choose from and varied prices .I know its not always a good thing to go for the cheapest so Hybrid can you give me a make and model which i can rely on .I trust you implicity hope that's how you spell it .
And i could do with a few lessons on posting on here all the little boxes above are beyond me (((((( B I u Quote code list= img url))))))))
It's my age you see lost the plot somewere along the line.

Love you all Millie

wireless router?

This is a ok router..
Netgear WGR614 Cable/dsl 802.11g 54 Mbps Wireless Router
£80'ish

Other makes go for are D-Link, Linksys, buffalo and belkin or ok'ish

You will also need 2 wireless cards as well..
Netgear Wg311 54mbps 802.11g Wireless Pci Card
£45'ish each..

There is two types of wireless stuff now... above is the latest, but if you want to go for slower equipment, 11 Mbps stuff, it will be cheaper..

If you just two wireless cards for both pc's you can configure them to see each other and you will need to enable internet connection sharing on the main one. However, you can not use the encryption. Encryption is used to stop people from connecting to your network if they have a wireless card, it is basically a encrypted key, if you dont know the key, you cant join the network.

If you decide that is too much,,, 2 ways you can do this...

1. Get a standard dsl router like this
Netgear RP614 Broadband Router + 4 port 10/100 Switch. Platinum Range
£45-50

And connect both computers to this.

Other very cheap but un-effiecent way, but depends on how much the kids use the computer, is to run a cross over cable from your pc to theirs.. and just enable internet connection sharing.

Down side of internet connection sharing is that you have to have your pc on while they use theirs.

If you decide to use wired method... i can make network cables to any length and type.

Hi Millie,

Firstly, Happy New Year to you too...

Personally, I do not recommend Wireless routers mainly due to the current security related issues they cause. In the US and over here (but as bad), hot-points are marked on walls, this is what the FBI are trying to stop. What this means is anyone with the proper knowledge can hijack your connection to the internet, through your wireless connection.

You say loads of wires, infact it would only be one cable, it only becomes more if you have many computers and/or games consoles connected. My setup is very messy when it comes to the wiring, since I use a 'Switch' and 'Router' and run it all on a dual network, I won't go into that because I probably would lose you completely.

With a hardwired router, you would have one cable going from your cable modem to your router, then a cable for every PC connected - in your case this would be just 2 cables.

The router setup itself, requires you to actually 'clone' your MAC address of the main PC that is registered with Blueyonder. This actually varies on which router you buy, on how to setup. There are some on Ebay, which are cheap and work well, because I set one up just a few weeks ago! It was around £36 brand new, but I can't remember the make... :? However, if your interested I can contact the guy and get the details.

See what you think and if you still want to take the wireless option rather than hardwired.

As for the BBCode, HTML, etc on these boards, there's a FAQ just above these messageboards, and if you click on the BBCode in blue when typing a message another Guide will show you the basics of use.

Hope that helps you!
