device connect / disconnect

Hi Folks.

I'm running XP Home on a system that has various USB devices connected.
For no apparent reason and without any new devices added to the system,
I am constantly getting the connect / disconnect tones. Regular as
clockwork every few seconds. I assumed at first a device error but have
removed every USB item one by one and all together - but i still get
the tones. At the same time, the notification of the task bar has lost
the ability to hide inactive icons - this may or may not be linked.
I have done a full scan of the system for malicous spyware and virus
and it reports as being clean.
I have searched 'sounds' for any other activities that use the same
device connect / disconnect tones - and there is no other.

I appreciate I could turn the sound off - but I fear that the machine
or some software is doing something it shouldn't!

I am running the standars XP firewall and PC_Cillin - all up to date -
and have the latest Ms patches and fixes installed.

The constant tones of connect / discoinnect is slowly driving me crazy!

Can anybody advise - or perhaps exlain how else to doscoiver what may
be conecting / disconnecting - or why the icons won't hide?

I have done al the most obvious things over the last few days .....

Thanks

Mick
