Windows Update has failed on my computer since February.

I disabled Norton Internet Security and the Windows Update worked correctly.
I loaded 2 of the 4 critical updates my computer needed.

I enabled Norton Internet Security, the remaining two failed.
I disabled Norton Internet Security, the remaining two were SUCCESSFUL.

So the issue, at least on my computer, is Norton Internet Security 2006.

Unfortunately I am not using Norton Internet Security and I am still having
the problem. I am using the Window XP firewall and tried with it on and off,
still having the problem.

I am running Norton Anti-virus but still having issues updating even turned
on and off.

Do keep your firewall on. Now the, instead of simply stating a general statement "update failed", do provide some details.
And take a look at the update log, and , if needed, attach an extract of it back here.

Which update is involved? do you remember the fix number or name?
Was it a failure in the download phase, or in the update phase?

What *is* the error number you saw? and what Error number(s) in your log?

Go back to Windows Update, but then select View update history. (When you first get to website for Microsoft Update-Windows Update, look at left-hand column, under Options. Press "Review your update history".)
If this is on V6 of Windows Update, you should be able to click on that error note, and see some info.

Post an *extract* from the log, but only for the very last date.
Use Wordpad and open & look at the Windows Update log file
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log or C:\WINNT\WindowsUpdate.log

Scroll down all the way. Get / copy / paste (ideally, put into a file & attach in reply back here) the set of lines for (today's ) the last session.

I am not receiving an error. It will freeze and lock up my computer.

I attempted to run the Windows update (express or custom) about a week ago.
When I attempted to run the update the site had me do an update for the
installer. Once I did that the freezing started.

I wiped my machine think that I received a virus.

I attempted it again afer the wipe and still receiving the same thing. I had
no third party software installed at the time (no norton products)

There is no error that I am receiving just locking up.

The lock up begin right when I click on express or custom. I get an
hourglass and that is all.

I started a thread yesterday on this and others are having the same problem.
This is not a hit or miss issue. I even spoke with my friends today and they
are getting the same message and lock up, exactly the same.

Additional information...

When I did a wipe of the computer last night, my automatice installation did
run for critical updates. I just can not do a manual update. I know there are
custom updates I need to run, but can't.

Glen,
Granted you state it freezes, but your Windows Update log should have a big clue as to where it *froze* or had a problem.
Kindly get an extract out of it, copy & paste back here in a reply. Just for the last 2 sessions or so.

Give the process at Windows (MIcrosoft) Update a number of minutes before you decide it froze. As in 5 to 8 minutes or so.
As long as the Green bars are moving on screen, it is likely still working.

Another tip: for the time being, please just select Express option (until after your current problem is cured).

There is no progress bar when I click on 'express'. There are no green bar.
The system literaly locks up. Nothing runs, not even the clock.

At the risk of upsetting someones' sesibilities, my considered view is that nobody should ever contemplate dowloading critical updates or patches with any version of NIS past 2003 installed and / or running.
Whilst I appreciate the for some people it represents the best available, my experience is that in general it causes more problems than it solves, paticularly with M$ updates.
Secondly, Microsofts' web servers tend to be super-critical recently because of the addition of product accreditation, so the slightest glitch in the process will result in a failed download and /or installation.
The simplest work-round in this case is to download BigFix and get all the updates and patches from there.
No accreditation, no hassle and a perfect job every time!
