Just in case someone wants to buy me an optical mouse for christmas, I was wondering if they are just a gimmick that uses up more memory ?

most hardware does not take up memory, i use an optical mouse and you dont need any software for it so its just the same as a normal mouse driver side.
I would reccomend you do

Hehehe....Gimmick.

No, optical mice rule Ball mice - I find that ball mice seem to start gong "lumpy" after a few years.

My Low end M$ Wheelmouse Optical Has served me brilliantly for yonks - and its USB

I find USB smoother onscreen than PS/2 As well

Well mine is the same as Cleve's - good 'all-rounder', eventhough mines a bit worn now (on Xmas wish list! ).

Never needs cleaning! Even use up a wall - if you want to go that far!

You would be surprised what I have seen when it comes to computer mice!

One woman I was repairing a computer for, had a normal mouse with no ball... When I asked her where the ball was, she replied "The cat plays with it, and I've not seen it for weeks!". Needless to say, repairing her PC took longer than usual..

As I clean my balls regularly (about once a year ops: ) I don't get any problem (but you have to remember to clean the rollers the ball sits on as well)
I tried various cordless rodents, but got fed up with the low battery life. Maybe things have changed now, but there's nothing like a good solid £2.50 rat like thing with a long tail firmly tethered to my box (they're really only there to stop them getting lost!) rolling around happily on my carpet.
