Unhappy missing Madeleine

It's been over a week since youngster Madeleine McCann went missing from an Algarve holiday resort.

The three-year-old, from Rothley, Leicestershire, disappeared from an apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3.

Madeleine had been left sleeping with her brother and sister, two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie, while her parents, Gerry and Kate, dined at a nearby restaurant.
She had been wearing white pyjama bottoms with a small floral design and a short-sleeved pink top with a picture of Eeyore on it.

The latest...

Police are looking at CCTV footage showing a girl fitting Madeleine's description with a woman at a service station just a few miles from the village of Praia Da Luz.

The woman was said to be urging the girl to say "thank you" to staff but she appeared reluctant, apparently wanting to say something, which made staff suspicious

As part of efforts to find the three-year-old, search teams have scoured a nine-mile (15km) stretch of land and sea.

However, Portuguese police appear to be scaling scale down their efforts.

£1 million reward

Meanwhile, a Scottish businessman has offered a £1 million reward to anyone who provides information leading to the return of missing Madeleine McCann.

Stephen Winyard, the owner of a Scottish health spa, made the offer through The Times newspaper.

Support

Mark Warner Holidays which runs the Ocean Club resort where the McCanns are staying said that it had been so overwhelmed with messages of support for the couple that it had set up a special email address.

Anyone who wishes to pass messages to the family can do so by e-mailing: mccannfamily@markwarner.co.uk.

Web appeal

Portuguese police have now issued a formal appeal for information about the disappearance of Madeleine. It carries details of the abduction, alongside a photo of the three-year-old and a phone number for the public to call.

If you are in Portugal and have any information, call the Portuguese Police direct on +351 282 405 400. Otherwise, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Email poster appeal

Madeleine's aunt has been distributing an email poster of Madeleine to create more publicity for the case.

The poster shows a picture of the youngster in a pink hat holding tennis balls and appeals for anyone who may have seen her to call Crimestoppers in the UK.

Re: missing Madeleine

Symbol for Maddie's mum

From NICK PARKER
at The Vatican
May 31, 2007

A BUTTERFLY gave hope to brave Kate McCann yesterday — as it landed softly on her hair before an emotional audience with The Pope. The tiny Red Admiral then flitted from the yellow ribbon tying her ponytail, only to return two minutes later.
Missing Maddie’s mum said: “It was strange, but lovely, like a symbol of hope.” The butterfly stayed on Kate’s ribbon — itself a symbol of the hopeful return of snatched Maddie, four — for 30 seconds.
It then flew off and circled magnificent St Peter’s Square where Kate and husband Gerry, both 38, were waiting to meet Pope Benedict XVI.
Astonishingly, it reappeared — picking out Kate again from 30,000 people in the square and settled on her lapel.
Gerry was the first to notice the second appearance and nudged his wife.
Family spokesman Clarence Mitchell, who was with the couple, said: “I almost welled up. It was as if Madeleine was with us and was a good omen.

Hope ... Red Admiral butterfly

“The butterfly was a symbol of hope. Gerry said just looking at this graceful creature gave him hope.
“It picked Kate and her yellow ribbon out of everyone. It was beautiful.”
The couple from Rothley, Leics, had jetted to Rome from Portugal where Maddie was snatched from their holiday apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz 28 days ago.
